More than $9 billion is currently being invested in the Kansas City region. The Downtown Council reports that since 2000, more than $4 billion has been invested in downtown, Kansas City, Mo., alone. Below is a brief overview of the top developments currently underway or planned in the two-state region.

Kansas City Power  |
Description: More than 450,000 square feet of restaurants, clubs, retail and office space spanning nine square blocks in the heart of downtown Kansas City, the Power & Light District will be the largest entertainment district in the Midwest. | Village West  |
Description: Village West has become state of Kansas’ largest tourism attraction. The 400-acre district includes the Kansas Speedway, Cabela’s, Nebraska Furniture Mart, Great Wolf Lodge, and T-Bones minor league ballpark. Description: This 300-acre family destination and resort will include one of the world’s largest tubing waterparks, a mile-long, covered riverwalk with shops and restaurants, an interactive marine park and a variety of unique lodging accommodations. Prairiefire  |
Description: With more than 600,000 square feet of office, retail and residential space, the area will be home to high-end boutique retail, a performance stage and ice skating rink. | East Village |
Description: Anchored by the new headquarters for JE Dunn Construction Group, East Village will redevelop the east side of downtown, Kansas City, Mo. The plan calls for 1,200 residential units and 85,000 square feet of retail. LocatioN: Kansas City, Mo. CompletioN: 2009 Investment: $357 million |
| Park Place Community |
Description: The first mixed-use development of its kind in Johnson County, Kan., Park Place will contain 125,000 square feet of retail space designed to look like a traditional Main Street. Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts Center  |
Description: Designed by Moshe Safdie & Associates, The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts Center will hold a 1,600-seat ballet and opera house, 1,600-seat concert hall and a 250-seat “Celebration Hall.” LocatioN: Kansas City, Mo. CompletioN: 2009 Investment: $326 million |
| The Walk  |
Description: Broken into two segments, The Village and City Walk, this 75-acre development serve one of Kansas City’s business commute corridors. The Village includes plans for a minor league ballpark, hotel and conference center. | Sprint Center  |
Description: The Sprint Center is a new arena seating 18,000 to 20,000 and home to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. LocatioN: Kansas City, Mo. CompletioN: 2007 Investment: $276 million |
Corbin Park  |
Description: A 96-acre development including 1.1 million square feet of office, retail and hotel space. Corbin Park will be home to the areas only Trader Vic's and Von Maur. LocatioN: Overland Park, Kan. CompletioN: 2008 Investment: $225 million |
| Nelson-Atkins  |
Description: Adding 165,000 square feet, or the equivalent of 67-story skyscraper laying on its side, the Nelson-Atkin’s new Bloch Building is a work of art itself. The addition exists mainly underground with five transparent glass structures emerging into the museum’s sculpture park. The expansion increases the museum’s space by a third and will house a new entry lobby, library, café and sculpture park. The $7.4 million Ford Learning Center is also a new addition to the museum. | BNSF Intermodal Park  |
Description: This 1,300-acre intermodal park will compare to BNSF’s parks in Fort Worth and Chicago. BNSF will bring freight from Pacific ports to be offloaded onto trucks and distributed regionally or stored in private warehouses. | Federal Reserve Bank  |
Description: A 600,000 square foot limestone-clad tower occupying a 15.7 acre site will include 12 floors above a two-story base. It will house a coin museum and displays of the bank system. LocatioN: Kansas City, Mo. CompletioN: 2008 Investment: $200 million |
| Parkway Plaza |

| Zona Rosa  |
Description: Zona Rosa is pedestrian-friendly development encompassing 1.2 million square feet, of retail, office, residential, entertainment and hotel establishments. The development’s “new urbanism” includes storefronts adjacent to newly built narrow streets, wide tree-line sidewalks and open gathering areas. LocatioN: Kansas City, Mo. Description: The Kansas City Convention Center is adding a 50,000-square-foot ballroom over Interstate 670 and making major technology upgrades. The new meeting space will have the capacity to accommodate events for 6,000 people. The first phase, completed in 2004, renovated the center’s meeting and prefunction rooms. | Children’s Mercy Hospital |
Description: Children’s Mercy Hospital has added a new Pediatric Research Center and Primary Care Clinics totaling $37 million. Description: A 2.4-acre development the West Edge will house the headquarters of Bernstein-Rein, a variety of retail and commercial units, a boutique hotel, signature restaurant, 261-seat auditorium, rooftop swimming pool and garden. Description: Kansas City’s home brewing company is adding a three-story, 70,000-square-foot facility adjacent to its current facility.
